What can an office worker sitting behind a desk on twitter possibly have to contribute to social gatherings, or face-to-face human interactions of any sort? And why would they want to when it’s much more fun to hone their wit or ire on the avatars of people whom they never have to meet?
Nevertheless, it’s better for everyone’s sake if they get out of doors every once in a while, and not just when there’s a fire drill. What better excuse than the Social Media Exchange (#SMEX), held every 6 months, which brings together individuals doing similar jobs, usually singlehandedly, in different organisations.
#SMEX is hosted by sounddelivery, which was originally a charity podcasting production company. Within the twinkling of an eye it seems, it has become a hub for useful social media training events, conferences and get-togethers. Where else can you enjoy the spectacle of Google’s Chewy Trewhalla being accosted by a blind web manager who can’t access the Google search bar? OK, that’s a bit geeky. How about director Ken Loach on his film Looking for Eric? Better than your average conference. Perhaps this can only be topped by the appearance of Eric Cantona himself at some future event, perhaps explaining how social networkers can follow the trawler. I live in hope.
